چکیده

Microwave llequency standards based on room temperature ‘~g+ ions in a Linear Ion Trap (LITS) presently achieve a Signal to Noise and line Q inferred short term frequency stability of uY(~)= 2x 10-14/T ln. Long term stability has been measured for averaging intervals up to S months with apparent sensitivity to variations in ion number/temperature limiting the flicker floor to about 5x 10’6 at 100,000 seconds. A two segment version of the linear ion trap (LITE) has also recently demonstrated excellent frequency stability for measurement intewals up to one week. Nearly an order of magnitude improvement in long term stability compared to the LITS is expected since this trap cotilguration operates with reduced linear ion density during the microwave interrogation period.

Prospects for Ultra-stable Timekeeping with Sealed Vacuum Operation in Multi-pole Linear Ion Trap Standards

A recent long-term comparison between the compensated multi-pole Linear Ion Trap Standard (LITS) and the laser-cooled primary standards via GPS carrier-phase time transfer showed a deviation of less than 2.7×10/day. A subsequent evaluation of potential drift contributors in the LITS showed that the leading candidates are fluctuations in background gases and the neon buffer gas. The current vacu...

Optical Clocks with Cold Atoms and Stable Lasers*

The performance and prospects for neutral-atom optical frequency standards are discussed based on our recent progress with a calcium optical frequency star~dard. Second stage narrow-line cooling to microkelvin (and even 300 nK) temperatures, combined with launched atoms, should reduce Doppler frequency errors to about 1x10 1 6 . Advanced femtosecond optical frequency combs allow direct comparis...

Optical Frequency Standards and Measurements

We describe the performance characteristics and frequency measurements of two high-accuracy high-stability lasercooled atomic frequency standards. One is a 657-nm (456-THz) reference using magneto-optically trapped Ca atoms, and the other is a 282-nm (1064-THz) reference based on a single Hg ion confined in an RF-Paul trap. A femtosecond mode-locked laser combined with a nonlinear microstructur...

Determination of Gain and Phase Margins in Lur’e Nonlinear Systems using Extended Circle Criterion

Nonlinearity is one of the main behaviors of systems in the real world. Therefore, it seems necessary to introduce a method to determine the stability margin of these systems. Although the gain and phase margins are established criteria for the analysis of linear systems, finding a specific way to determine the true value of these margins in nonlinear systems in general is an ongoing research i...

Quantum Algorithmic Readout in Multi-Ion Clocks.

Optical clocks based on ensembles of trapped ions promise record frequency accuracy with good short-term stability. Most suitable ion species lack closed transitions, so the clock signal must be read out indirectly by transferring the quantum state of the clock ions to cotrapped logic ions of a different species. Existing methods of quantum logic readout require a linear overhead in either time...
